"The Crossing", taken with a
Canon 5D camera, circa 2008: Heavy
digital manipulation.
Every
year on the 2nd Saturday in August, the
Lake Gaston Chamber of Commerce and
O’SAIL (Organization to Support the
Arts, Infrastructure, and Learning on
Lake Gaston) co-host "The Crossing", an
all-day get-together that spans both
sides of the Eaton Ferry Bridge. With
food, art shows and music, it's a
guaranteed good time for all. One of the
primary events is the actual crossing
itself, when all types of pre-registered
crazy folks swim, paddle, float, and
otherwise flounder in all types of
hand-made contraptions from one
side of the Eaton Ferry Bridge to the
other. On this particular day I had
volunteered to anchor my bass boat alongside
a whole lot of other folks' boats,
forming a protective alleyway so the wet
passersby did not have to worry about
other boaters running them over. The
Coast Guard spearheads the volunteer
effort, shutting down all boat traffic
until the participants make it
safely across.
Once anchored in
my
boat, however, I became a part of
something that I couldn't leave:
anchored for the duration no matter what. So, with
nothing else to do than drink tea and
sweat, I took pictures of everything
that moved, including this robust
swimmer who tore across the waterway
like a seal. One of the photos I took
that day ended up on the cover of The
Daily Herald's, The Lake Magazine.
I can't recall if this particular
swimmer's un-doctored picture is the
same one used on the cover or not, but
you get the idea. Everyone had a good
time. Next time I volunteer to anchor my
boat, I'll be sure to use the pontoon
boat, instead. That Bimini top will be
much appreciated.
If you
haven't already visited "The Crossing",
give it a shot. Lots of fun for all
ages, even if you choose not to jump in
and gurgle your way across the lake.
