"Fog Fishing at Eaton Ferry Bridge", taken with a
Canon 5D camera, circa 2007:
I was
scrubbing down boats in the parking lot
of Four Seasons Electric Boats, where I
worked with the Hartley family for
several years. It was very early in the
morning and late in the season, a
perfect primetime goulash for the
formation of soft mist and fog. At some
point I noticed the silhouette of a
ghostly fisherman silently flipping a
lure toward the Eaton Ferry Bridge
abutments. I wiped my hands free from
the soapy boat wash water, and grabbed
my camera. I crossed River Road without
being run over and crouched down low in
the weeds, not to hide, but to better
show off the striking green-on-brown
foreground, enlivening it a tad more
with a subtle dollop of fill flash,
which can allow a greater depth of field
in low light if you're careful not to
overdo it.
A couple
minutes later I climbed the bank and
walked back across the road to a lot
filled with dusty boats needing to be
cleaned. For the rest of the morning I
wished I was in one of them fishing on
the other side of the road, hidden in
the fog.
